Explosion Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Eviction Operation in Italy
Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
Sequence of Events
The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the property near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled following the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the building left as a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He thought the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed local news, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
