Citizens have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed official commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the plan.

A senior representative knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not produce any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the area

Civilian Feeling

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose family member endured the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."

"After we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

In front of the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the music event, mourners came together to remember the victims.

From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli attacks continued.

In the urban center, attacks were noted in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night falls, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city said two more dead people had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, medical staff reported.
