The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The freezers were placed behind a false wall in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in the month of June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the female victim, stated to police last week that there had been an incident—but disputed homicide.

Informing the media recently, a representative for the state prosecutor said the pair were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

The identities of those concerned have been withheld by law enforcement, in accordance with local legislation.

The family's disappearance was first reported by the woman's cousin, who resides in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Police stated the 55-year-old suspect told them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her child to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

Her bank card was then noted as being active abroad repeatedly.

However when police entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was located.

Someone also reported overhearing a commotion in the dwelling, and screams of "mama" on the day the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

A broader police investigation was initiated, with investigators discovering various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—among them a resignation letter to her workplace and communications to the 55-year-old suspect.

Law enforcement stated a significant cash transfer was also moved to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed media representatives on Tuesday that a storage facility had been rented out before the victims' disappearance and a freezing appliance had been installed within.

The brothers extracted the freezer from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter vanished, she stated. And a week later, they acquired a second unit.

Officials say they think this points to the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The reason for their demise was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the bodies," the official said.

A legal representative—of the public prosecutor's office—said the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the bodies were expertly concealed and went unnoticed during a earlier inspection.

Although the men were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any murderous intent, authorities confirmed.

Meanwhile, his 53-year-old sibling admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but denied knowledge of a killing.

The two suspects are at this time in detention before court proceedings in detention centers in Innsbruck and Salzburg, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister said the "reported homicide of mother and child... constitutes the abrupt and violent termination of a mother and child and reveals a cruel system".

"Women and girls are falling victim to homicide due to the simple reality that they are female," they added.

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
